The drama. Faye Dunaway announced La La Land as the winner of the biggest accolade of the night, but as half of the crew entered the stage, it was quickly learned that Moonlight were the correct winners.

Shock is scattered across the cast of Moonlight and La La Land

The 89th Academy Awards were held last night, in honour of the best film and performances of 2016. Jimmy Kimmel hosted the night of esteemed decorations.

Viola Davis and Emma Stone were amongst the dead certain to pick up wins for the performances in Fences and La La Land, respectively. After patterns emerging from SAG AwardsGolden Globes, BAFTAs and others award ceremonies, Davis picking up Best Support Actress and Stone picking up Best Actress trophies lead to their Oscar win.

Casey Affleck received the award for Best Actor for his dreary but compelling performance in Manchester by the Sea.

The Best Supporting Actor award went to Mahershala Ali for his engaging role as a crack dealer who takes the leading actor (Chiron) under his wing, away from his abusive mother. Mahershala Ali is the first ever Muslim to win an Academy Award.

La La Land suggested to almost sweep and win their fourteen nominations, went home with six. The major hiccup of the night was La La Land accepting the award for Best Picture till the musical’s producer, Jordan Horowitz, stepped in:”This is not a joke. Moonlight is best picture,” he said, showing the camera the card and revealing the correct winner.
